Mercedes-Benz is Officially Bringing the Insane G550 4×4² to the U.S.

A couple years ago, Mercedes did something shocking. It actually decided to produce a six-wheeled pickup truck version of the G-wagen called the G63 AMG 6×6. It was possibly even more ridiculous than the idea sounds, using portal axles to give it more than 18 inches of ground clearance. Oh, and it also had five mechanically locking differentials.  Mercedes then followed that up with a (slightly) less insane version that only had four wheels, the G500 4×4². But unlike the G63 AMG 6×6, the four-wheeled version is officially coming to the U.S. Yes, Mercedes announced yesterday that it would bring the G500 4×4² to States. Except it would receive a slight name change. Its now called the G550 4×4², so its still a mouthful—and a little difficult to type—but at least it fits with Mercedes American naming conventions. Under the hood, youll get a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 that makes 416 horsepower and 450 lb.-ft. of torque. Paired with Mercedes dated seven-speed transmission, that should be enough grunt to get this beast moving. Weight hasnt been announced yet, but considering that a stock G550 weighs 5724 lbs., its safe to say the G550 4×4² will be even more portly. With the portal axles, the G550 4×4² now has 17.2 inches of ground clearance, nearly eight more than regular G550. It can also ford nearly 40 inches of water, approximately 16 more than the G550. We cant imagine many of them will actually get taken off-road, but clearly you could if you wanted to. Mercedes says the G550 4×4² will be available at U.S. dealerships early next year, so if youre itching to get your hands on one, you wont have to wait long. You will, however, have to wait on pricing, as that hasnt been announced yet.

Is there any way to pre-load it? At 7GBs, that’s going to take an awfully long time for me to download here in the rural south.
